Knowing the Time

by David and Stephen Olford

Text: "Knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than we believedput ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof" (Rom. 13:11-14).

Thought: These words constitute a call to the believer to live in such a fashion that his daily behavior will demand a supernatural explanation.  There cannot be a God-given love toward our neighbors without a God-governed life before those same neighbors.  Thus we have here:

The Life of Vigilant Expectancy. "It is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.  The night is far spent, the day is at hand" (vv. 11, 12).  The Apostle is telling us here that if we know anything of redemptive love toward our neighbors in a world that is lost, we cannot indulge in soul slumber. Never have world conditions been so grim and foreboding as at the present hour; and yet we can be certain that the darker the world scene, the sooner will dawn the day of our God. God is on the move to accomplish His purpose, and He likewise calls us to a life of vigilant expectancy.

The Life of Valiant Morality. "Let uscast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light" (v.12). There is no greater contribution that we can make to our generation than the outliving of valiant morality. We have strong words from the Apostle to enforce this quality of life. He calls upon us to doff the garments of the night: "rioting and drunkenness, chambering and wantonness, strife and envying" (v.13).  We are to exchange these ugly rags for the garment of salvation which the Lord has provided. Thank God, we have also been given the armor of protection so that we might be able to face the attacks of the enemy. No matter how dark and wicked our world may be, the armor of light provides an impervious and impenetrable protection against the wiles of the devil. So let us "puton the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lust thereof." Only thus shall we maintain the life of valiant morality.
