The Creation Account Is Part of the Holy Bible

by Ted Kyle

I'll probably take some heat on this, but here goes: I find it deeply troubling that so many church leaders apparently have a low view of the integrity of the Bible.

I am speaking specifically of the first eleven chapters of the Book of Genesis—the book in which God tells us how it all began.

It is over the "days" of creation that many avert their eyes and sweep on by.

"Days" just can't equal the millions and billions of years that evolutionists insist on—and a lot of evangelicals buy that package. Of course, many others shrug off the whole question, thinking it doesn't make much difference to the church which position is correct.

But they are wrong. The believability—and consequently the authority—of the Bible is at stake. Quite simply, if the opening chapters of Genesis are untrustworthy, the entire Word of God is open to question. The Apostle Paul said: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2 Tim. 3:16). "All Scripture" includes all of Genesis. God also spoke through the Apostle Peter: "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Pet. 1:21). The Holy Spirit knows alland does not lie.

If we believe the Bible, God's Word, there is no "wiggle-room" here. If we deny the creation account in Genesis 1, we make a liar of the Holy Spirit. That's awfully blunt, but it is true. We cannot be true to God's Word and throw out His account of the Six Days of Creation.

(I am aware of the tired old arguments that each day represents an eon. They are simply older attempts to get around the simple account of six days—and they cannot hold water, if for no other reason than that plant life came on Day Three, while sunlight came on Day Four. Certainly, plants can survive one ordinary day without sunlight; but not thousands or millions of years!)

The problem is the "geologic column," with its layers labeled as accounting for vast spans of time. This concept has such a hold on public understanding that it seems impossible to contradict. Yet it rests upon its own shaky "column" of assumptions, which creationist geologists and scientists delight in showing up. The age assigned to the geologic column can no more be established than the rest of the evolutionists' web of arguments. (And interesting facts about the rapid formation of a geologic column formed after Mt. St. Helens blew its top, only a few years ago, are available from the Institute for Creation Research, 800-628-7640, www.icr.org.)

Perhaps the saddest comment on this scene was made by Dr. Eugenie Scott, an atheist and vehement anti-creationist. In a magazine interview she once stated: "I have found that the most effective allies for evolution are people of the faith community. One clergyman with a backward collar is worth two biologists at a school board meeting any day!"*

The issue is the truth of the Bible. And that's worth fighting for!
