God's Word tells us, "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thess. 5:18, kjv).
Thanksgiving often just automatically wells up in us out of our grateful hearts, but sometimes thanksgiving is simply an act of faith.
When we acknowledge our faith in Him through a thankful attitude, even though circumstances suggest there is no hope, God releases His miraculous power and intervention on our behalf. He often turns tragedy to triumph, discord to harmony, and defeat to victory.
Many years ago my personal world seemed to be crumbling around me. All that I had worked and planned for in the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ was hanging by a slender thread. Because of a series of unforeseen circumstances, we were facing a financial crisis that could bankrupt the movement. This would result in the loss of our beautiful new facilities at Arrowhead Springs, California.
Many years before I had discovered that when we express faith through thanksgiving, obedience, and gratitude to God, He releases His great power on our behalf. He enables us to be more fruitful for Him. So when the word came to me that everything was virtually lost, I fell to my knees and began to praise the Lord and thank Him for who He is, what He had done for me, and what He was going to do for me and Campus Crusade for Christ.
As I thanked God in the midst of this crisis, His supernatural peace flooded my heart. I felt assured that He would provide the miracle we needed.
In a matter of a few days, totally apart from any of my own abilities to solve the problem, God brought the right people into the right circumstances with the funds to save Arrowhead Springs for the ministry.
We must never trust in our own abilities, but only in the Lord. He is the one who opens doors that no man can shut, and shuts doors that no man can open. When we put our trust in Him, praise Him and thank Him, He fulfills His promises to act on our behalf.
Just six verses after the one quoted above, God says, "Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it" (v. 24).
