"What does God really want?" In a sense it is a very easy question to answer. To love Him! "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind'" (Matt. 22:37). And to do His will! "And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46) And what things does He say? Well, for one, to love one another (John 13:34). And to serve others (Matt. 20:25-28). And to live in such a way that God is glorified (Matt. 5:16). There is more, of course, much more. but He has not left us ignorant. It can be found in His word, upon which there is a lifetime-no, better, an eternal-warranty. "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away" (Matt. 24:26).
But these are generalities, one might observe. What of specifics? Where should I go to school? What should I study? Whom should I marry? What job should I take? Where should I worship? How can I best serve? How should I spend my money? Important questions all. And ones that should be brought before the Father. But if we get them wrong, and some of them we might, and if we sin, and we will, still God is there. He does not desert us when we err. And He can right wrong choices. And fix that which is broken. But the one thing that we alone can provide is a willingness to have Him do so. He will court us ever so ardently, but He will not force us to yield to Him. Ultimately, that choice is ours alone.
"Whom shall I send?" That was God's question so many, many years ago. And God's man answered, "Here am I; send me." The question is the same today.
So what should our answer be? Where we are sent, and when, and how, and what happens when we get there, are up to God. It may be to a far-away mission field, or to an office down the road, or to a house around the corner. The service may be dramatic or commonplace. None of that really matters. What matters is our willingness to go, our willingness to make His will our own. That's it, I think. Our willingness. That's what God really wants.
