Was Christ God? written by Dr. Spiro Zodhiates, the founder of Pulpit Helps, is a defense of the deity of Christ. Growing up in a family, and belonging to a church, that believed in the inerrancy of the Bible, the deity of Christ was never brought into question. Jesus was God come in the flesh! You would think ALL who call themselves Christian would, without hesitancy, question or doubt, agree. But sadly, that’s not the case. There are those (calling themselves Christian) who agree His life is a good example on how to live, and He should be admired for dying for His beliefs, but deny He’s the Eternal God.
Why is it pivotal to Christianity to believe in the Incarnation (Christ is God come in the flesh)? There are several reasons, but I’ll only mention three.
First, if Christ is not God, He is a liar and deceiver, for He claimed to be God. The Apostle John begins his Gospel with the declaration “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Jesus clearly states in John 10:30: “I and my Father are one.” In John 14:9-11 Jesus says to Philip, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me; otherwise believe on account of the works themselves” (nasb).
The Apostle Paul never doubted the deity of Jesus. In Colossians 2:9 Paul says, “For in Him dwelled all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (kjv).
Second, if He was not God He could not complete the work of redemption, for that is something only God can do. Doing our best to live a good life is never enough to save us from our sin. Paul said “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Rom.3:20 kjv)
Romans 5 clearly states that the only way to be made righteous in the eyes of God is by the finished work of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection from the grave.
And thirdly, if Christ is not God our claim to salvation through Him is a delusion. But because Christ is God, salvation in Him is a certainty. As Paul said in Romans 8:38-39: “I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (nasb).
Was Christ God? Yes! Christmas is the celebration of that Truth! “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world” (1 John 4:14 kjv).
