Preach the Word

by Stephen F. Olford

Text: “I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:2-5).

Thought: Seldom in the history of our country has there been a greater need for the sound preaching of the Word of truth in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is God’s pleasure that preaching should continue to the end of the age (1 Cor. 1:21). In our text, three aspects of preaching clearly stand out:

<![if !supportEmptyParas]> <![endif]>

1. We Must Have a Divine Focus in Our Preaching: “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (v. 2). The focus of preaching is the Person of Christ. Jesus Christ—His humanity and deity—must be proclaimed. Our focus must also be the Passion of Christ: “Him crucified.” The word “crucified” is emphatic in the Greek. There is no gospel without preaching the blood.

2. We Must Have a Divine Force in Our Preaching: “…in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (v. 4). This supernatural force is both the enabling and enveloping power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that His disciples would be “endued” (clothed) with the power of the Holy Spirit. We must believe His promise and receive His power every time we preach the Word.

3. We Must Have a Divine Faith in Our Preaching: “Your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (v. 5). This is a faith that embodies content in preaching and establishes converts by preaching. It is saving faith “in the power of God” (v. 5b). I exhort all who read these “Points to Ponder” to “preach the Word” until Jesus comes!

Thrust:

“Preach the Word,” the call is clear,

Lift up Christ as Savior, Lord,

Sound the message without fear,

By God’s power, “Preach the Word!”
