State Closes 122 Christian Schools in Nigeria

The Kano state government in northern Nigeria has closed 122 Christian schools, claiming that they were operating illegally. Mohammed Tahir Adamu, special adviser to the Kano state governor on Islamic Affairs, denied that the government is discriminating against Christians through its educational policies. However, Anglican Bishop Zakka Nyam in Kano said the closures are part of the grand plan of Muslim politicians and their religious leaders to entrench Islam as Nigeria's state religion. "The government says we must employ Islamic clerics to indoctrinate our children, and when we say no, they close down our schools and then claim that we have not met their educational standards," Nyam said.
