Canadian Court Allows Spanking

On Jan. 15, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled 3-0 in favor of giving parents and teachers the right to discipline by spanking using "reasonable" force, reports ChristianWeek of Canada. The court did state that corporal punishment should not be used against children younger than 2, or against teenagers. Also, an object such as a ruler or belt may not be used, and no hitting the head of a child.

The ruling has been applauded by family advocacy groups, and especially by Church of God Pastor Henry Hildebrandt. Members of his church had their seven children taken from them last summer, after their parents admitted spanking them, and a trial is to begin on May 27 "to determine whether they need the protection of the Family and Children's Services."
