by Bill BrightWe Are at War
We have been at war since creation-Satan against God. The fact that there are two kingdoms at war is often ignored by Christians who do not take the Bible literally. All we have to do is read the warnings found in the Scriptures. God clearly states, in Deuteronomy 8, the calamity that can be expected if we do not choose to align ourselves with His kingdom:
"But I assure you of this: if you ever forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed. Just as the Lord has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed for not following the Lord your God" (Deut. 8:19,20, nlt).
Deuteronomy 28 outlines the incredible blessings for obedience to the Lord our God, as well as the devastating curses and effects of disobedience. In 2 Chronicles 20, we are exhorted and encouraged, as we engage in this spiritual warfare: "…Do not be afraid, don't be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God's…you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; stand still and watch the Lord's victory. He is with you…" (vv. 15, 17, nlt).
The powerful truth of these Scriptures cannot be denied, in light of the recent attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. Because of our nation's rebellion and disobedience, for several years now I have had the strong impression that something drastic like this, or perhaps something even more tragic, would happen. My deep concern is that, in the future, the major cities of America may experience major disaster, and millions of Americans will be destroyed. But those that carry out these vile acts of terrorism are not the real enemy; they are simply puppets of Satan himself.
If America insists on being the major exporter of pornography, the major importer of drugs, and promotes immoral degeneracy, she will pay a price. God cannot tolerate us further. As someone once said, "Unless God chastens America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah."
The only way we as a nation can truly expect to be preserved is to repent, fast, and pray, and once again seek our great God and Savior's favor. This country was not dedicated to "religion," but to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. George Washington, father of our country and first president, said in his farewell speech, "Of all the habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."
Another powerful quote, from Thomas Jefferson, is inscribed on the walls of the Jefferson Memorial in the nation's capital: "God, who gave us life, gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, of conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated, but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever."
During the Civil War, in a time of great crisis, President Lincoln issued a proclamation, at the request of the Senate, to call America to fast, pray, and repent. As a result, the Lord heard their cry, and the tragedy of the Civil War ended, though the consequences linger to this very day.
Now is the time for us, as Christians, to show the non-believing world that there is a God in heaven, who is loving and just. It is time for Christians to go into spiritual battle-the battle meaning repentance, prayer, and fasting on behalf of the nations of the earth. This is not a time for us to hate; this is a time for us to love. We dare not exhaust our energies reacting to those who despise our country. We, instead, need to be restored to our first love, and love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, love our neighbors as ourselves, and love our enemies. Frankly, because we as believers have not made this our priority, the whole nation is suffering the consequences.
So please join with me and millions of fellow believers to fast and pray and seek God's face for the fulfillment of 2 Chronicles 7:14. Remember, we are at war, but it is a spiritual war. Satan is attacking the kingdom of our living Christ, the Son of God, the Creator of the universe, and we are on His side. We dare not default by failing to take advantage of this opportunity, when the hearts of men are filled with fear. God bless you.
