Jews Up in Arms Over Naming Hurricane "Israel"

When the National Hurricane Center in Miami and the UN's hurricane-naming committee announced a list of names for this season's hurricanes, it raised a storm of protest from Jews world-wide. The possible consequence of a devastating storm named "Israel" causing massive destruction and death has enraged Jewish leaders who called it "stupid" and "insensitive."

Efraim Zuroff, Israel director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said, "There is a certain terrible irony to naming a hurricane Israel, given that the Nazis forced Jewish males who did not have a distinctly Jewish name, to add the name Israel as a middle name ... a killer hurricane named Israel is the last thing we need."
