Is That a Cloud I See?

by H.B. London, Jr.

The church of Jesus Christ is ripe with growth all around the world. Every indication points to the fact that God is at work in an unusual way. It is estimated that 28,000 people a day accept the Savior in the Peoples Republic of China; 24,000 a day in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. More than 50,000 new churches are opened each year in South America. Yet, in the United States we will close nearly 80 churches each week. Church attendance is on the decline. This is a nation where we have every advantage known to man. I wonder if we have taken seriously the call of God to build the church through evangelism, not gimmicks? As I travel the country I see the church grasping for nearly anything that seems to work, while in nation after nation the world is being saved one person at a time, by an army of laymen who still feel the salvation of mankind is their responsibility.

I am an observer of the church. To be honest with you, I'm not sure how we are ever going to reach our lost nation if we fail to recognize sin as sin. Statistics say that in spite of all the seeker-sensitive methods used to reach the lost, fewer non-Christians are coming to church. I am reminded that we are not about simply filling seats. We are about preaching and teaching a message of repentance.

There are thousands of churches who will not see one person coming to know Christ by the end of the year. Why? Because we have lost a vision for the unsaved.

When asked, "What is the greatest challenge you face as a pastor?" our survey shows the response to be: "The apathy of laymen. Our people have very little passion for the message of the great commission." Well folks, we had better generate some passion, or the world will continue to be unsaved and unimpressed by our "Madison Avenue" approach. They are looking for something genuine, not just something that glitters. So what can we do?

PRAY for a revival in your own life. The prayer of David is a good place to begin. "Search me, oh God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Ps. 19:23,24).

PRAY that God will burden your heart for the unsaved.

PRAY that God will place you in a field of spiritual harvest.

PRAY each day by name for the members of your family who are unsaved.

PRAY for your pastor/church leader that they will have courage to preach and speak the Word of God with boldness.

PRAY that the spiritual leaders in your community will be bold enough to risk all for a genuine spiritual outpouring.

PRAY that God will have mercy on our beloved nation even though we deserve His wrath and judgment.

It's not too late. There is a cloud on the horizon. It's small but filled with promise, and looks like it might bring blessing on our land. The rain of God's blessing is on the horizon.
