by Bob DasalOn Sunday, October 20th, 2002, churches across America will be observing Sunday School Teacher Appreciation Day. It is estimated that every Sunday morning 15 million volunteers (Sunday School teachers) lead in Bible studies for children, youths, and adults. The impact these dedicated folks have in our churches and on our society is immeasurable! Last year Ms. Lou Hays of Athens, Texas, received the Henrietta Mears National Sunday School Teacher of the Year (SSTY) Award. She was selected by an advisory board which included Dr. Bill & Vonette Bright (founders of Campus Crusade for Christ), Jack Hayford (founding pastor of the Church on the Way), Stephen Strang (president of Strang Communications), and Dr. Elmer Towns (dean of the School of Religion at Liberty University). At 87 years of age, Ms. Hays has faithfully taught the Word of God for 68 years and currently teaches a senior women’s class at First Baptist Church in Athens. She began teaching in 1933 at the age of 19 and her first Sunday School class was a group of high school girls. That class marked the beginning of a lifetime of teaching the Bible. Sherry Carhart, a member of Ms. Hays’ class for five years, said: “She has an unwavering devotion to her teaching and her class, as well as the community. Her love of God is apparent in each thing that she does.” Shirley Thornhill, another member of her class, said, “She not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. She makes the Bible come to life and makes its teaching real to each student.” Ms. Hays is just one example of the vast multitude of people who faithfully, energetically, and caringly teach Sunday school. In the life of so many pastors is the precious memory of a Sunday school teacher whose love for the Lord, love for the class, and faithful teaching of the Word made a significant and lasting impact on their lives and ministries. Pulpit Helps encourages pastors and churches to take the opportunity to say a special “Thank You” to all the Sunday School teachers in your churches on October 20th.
